History
-
Shotokan is a
school of karate developed from various martial
arts by master Gichin Funakoshi and his son
Yoshitaka. “Shoto” was the pen name Funakoshi
used in his poetry., which means “pine waves”
while “kan” means house. Hence “Shotokan”.
Shotokan is one of the worlds major karate
styles. Master Funakoshi was trained in two
different styles Shorei-ryu and Shorin-ryu.
After many years of study in both styles he
arrived at a new understanding of martial arts,
and a simpler style was created. He combined and
modified the styles, in several cases some of
the forms were modified favoring athleticism
over practicality. Shotokan is in the group of
hard styles.
